Foglight® 5

Release Information

Foglight 5 represents a major evolution of the Foglight management system. Every capability has been re-thought to better and more easily respond to today's dynamic challenges. Foglight is not only a better performance and availability management system for databases and applications, but Foglight has been extended to support Business Services Management (BSM), enabling organizations to create service roll-ups with Service Level Agreements (SLA), Operational Level Agreements (OLA), and Service Level Objectives (SLO).

Foglight 5 is built using a service-oriented architecture approach to give it unprecedented flexibility and extensibility. External services and APIs make it easy to tailor Foglight to match the varying needs of your organization. Amidst all this extensibility, dramatic ease-of-use considerations have been incorporated ensuring that everything needed for application and services management is available out-of-the-box.

Major Innovations Over Foglight 4

New CapabilityDescription
Automated Business Service and IT Asset Discovery

Foglight eliminates the need for manual setup work and ongoing maintenance effort thanks to its ability to automatically discover, map and model the business and IT assets and transactions within your organization. This saves you time and prevents your team from becoming mired in day-to-day administration tasks so they can focus on adding greater value to your business.

Real Time Dependency Modeling

Foglight allows you to prioritize IT application incidents according to business impact by leveraging its real time dependency modeling. This technology further reflects changes across the IT environment as they happen, ensuring that the view and models of your environment within Foglight are always up-to-date and accurate. Finally, it allows Foglight to track dependencies between IT components and services, the business services they support and the users that rely on them.

Dynamic User Transaction Tracing

Foglight gathers data on the exact transactions of each end user. Granular response time objectives can be set for a specific user group or even a single transaction. Should an individual user experience poor response time their path through the system can be tracked down to the method-level for instant root-cause diagnosis. All this while maintaining low overhead on the resources being monitored in the production environment.

SQL Bind Variable Information

Foglight tracks the exact SQL bind variables that are passed from dynamic or statically called SQL statements originating in Java. This is a unique feature in the market and key to problem identification and resolution in systems that leverage dynamic SQL statement creation, as provided by popular Java libraries like Hibernate.

Unified Management Dashboard

Foglight uses a completely portal-based user interface. Accessible through a standard web browser without the need for potentially unsafe plug-ins like Flash, ActiveX or Java Applets, the Foglight operations and administrations console can be used to view key metrics and SLAs from any source, even those outside Foglight itself. The completely customizable interface is only accessible through a security layer that can control the degree of customization as well as the data that is viewable by a particular user or role. This gives your organization the ultimate in safe information sharing.

Secure User Management

Foglight allows you to control access to all of its capabilities based on user or role definitions. Leverage already-in-place Active Directory or LDAP systems for seamless user management and automatically audit each user's actions - including login/logout and changes to administrative or operational settings within Foglight itself. Even set up alerts to instantly notify an administrator of suspicious activity.
