Version 2.1.0
Release Notes
November 16, 2008
Toad for Data Analysts is a multi-platform database query tool built for anyone who needs to access data, understand data relationships, and quickly produce reports.
With Toad for Data Analysts, you can:
Connect to almost any database or ODBC data source (See System Requirements)
Write SQL queries and join data across all platforms
Automate and schedule frequent and repetitive tasks
Streamline data collection
Collaborate with team members
Export data in a variety of file formats
Toad for Data Analysts provides a full featured ER Diagrammer, Database Browser, Query Builder, and Editor for the following databases:
Oracle
SQL Server
DB2 (LUW and z/OS)
Sybase ASE
MySQL
Most companies have additional databases that they need to connect to and query. To help achieve this, Toad provides basic connectivity, querying, and reporting functionality using the Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and ODBC providers. The inclusion of these additional providers should address the reporting requirements for most companies.
The purpose of the ODBC provider is to offer basic connection and querying capabilities to any database that supports an ODBC 3.0 or later driver. For a list of databases tested with the ODBC provider, see the System Requirements. This form of connectivity allows connections to databases such as Teradata, Netezza, IBM iSeries, and Ingres. Because this form of connectivity is generic, it is not full-featured and may not be as robust as the fully exploited providers for the other databases.
Review the following sections for updates in this release and new features:
If you migrate settings during an upgrade, Toad only migrates shared reports and project manager files if you are using the default directory in the Network Settings option page (Tools | Options | Environment | Network Share). If you specified a custom network share directory, the files will not be migrated.
The startup code in has been optimized and the result is a much faster startup time, especially for a “warm restart”.
The memory footprint has been reduced by optimizing the code and reducing the number of assemblies loaded.
The editor has been optimized to provide better support for medium to large scripts. Both the load time and memory footprint for loading scripts that are approximately 10 MB has been greatly improved.
Script output has been optimized to spool much faster and use less memory, especially in cases where large amounts of output are generated.
Toad now supports ODBC connections to Netezza databases. For more information, see System Requirements.
Many options that used to be managed in the Options window are now saved automatically when you close Toad. This allows increased consistency from session to session.
Toad includes new skins,
such as Office 2007 and a true Default skin that better
matches the standard Windows look-and-feel.
You can now hide object toolbars and access actions via a right-click
menu instead.
If you want to show the toolbars again, select Show Toolbar from the
right-click
menu.
For heterogeneous queries, you can determine the connection associated
with each table
or view, by placing the cursor over the table name in the Diagram pane.
The Document Recovery feature is now supported when running multiple instances
of Toad.
Script output has been optimized to spool much faster and use less memory, especially in cases where large amounts of output are generated.
Toad now displays output in grid and text formats.
The Commit and Rollback toolbar icons have been moved beside the AutoCommit drop-down on the status bar. These icons are only available if Autocommit is disabled.
You can now disable autocommit for the current editor only from the drop-down on the status bar if Autocommit is enabled.
The Test button in the Automation toolbar now has a keyboard shortcut (F5).
The following is a list of issues addressed and enhancements implemented in this release of Toad for Data Analysts.

Toad has been tested for Citrix support on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Server SP2 using the MetaFrame Presentation Server 4.0 and Citrix Presentation Server Clients 10.2. For information about installing Toad in a Citrix environment, see "Install Toad on Citrix Systems" in the Toad for Data Analysts Installation Guide.
Only Power users and Administrators can install Toad.
Note: (DB2 only) A Power User cannot install Toad if a DB2 for LUW version earlier than 8.1.7 already exists on the computer. Only an Administrator can install Toad under this condition. However, if the computer has an existing DB2 for LUW 8.1.7 or later installation, a Power User can install Toad as long as this user belongs to the DB2ADMNS or DBUSERS group.
If an Administrator installs Toad, the Administrator can share the Toad shortcut icon on the desktop and menu items with any user--a Power User, Restricted User, Vista standard user--on the computer.
If a Power User installs Toad, a Restricted User cannot do the following:
Associate file extensions.
See the Toad shortcut icon on the desktop or the Toad menu options in the Windows Start menu. As a workaround, Restricted Users can create a shortcut to Toad from the install directory and place the shortcut on their desktop.
The following describes the requirements and restrictions for users who launch and run Toad:
(DB2 only) A Power User or Restricted User must belong to the DB2ADMNS or DB2USERS group. To add the user to one of these groups, select Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management | System Tools | Local Users and Groups | Groups | DB2ADMNS or DB2USERS.
(DB2 only) A Windows Vista user must be either an administrator or a standard user that belongs to an Vista Administrators group. Additionally, to enable full functionality in Toad when Vista’s User Access Control security feature is turned on, the standard user must run Toad as an administrator. (Right-click the Toad icon on the Vista desktop and select Run as administrator.) See the Release Notes for a description of the restrictions that are in place when the standard user does not run Toad as an administrator.
(DB2 only) A Windows Power User or Restricted User does not have the authority to add or remove DB2 catalog entries using the Toad Client Configuration wizard. However, these users can use the Import Profile function in the Toad Client Configuration wizard to import catalog entries to Toad.
(DB2 only) To use Toad to manage DB2 for z/OS subsystems, the user ID defined in the Toad connection profile to connect a specific subsystem must either have SYSADM privileges or be granted SELECT permissions on the DB2 catalog tables.
Select Control Panel from the Windows Start menu.
- Double-click Administrative Tools.
- Double-click Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Configuration.
- Select My Computer, and then select the Runtime Security Policy node.
- Select Evaluate Assembly from the list of tasks in the right panel and browse to the location of Toad.exe in the File field.
Click Next and set the permission to Unrestricted.
To create or modify the QuestSoftware.ToadSecurity table to enable Toad Security, the user who maintains this table must have privileges to create, insert, update, and delete it. All other users need only the ability to read the QuestSoftware.ToadSecurity table to use Toad Security.
