Welcome to Spotlight on Messaging

Spotlight on Messaging helps administrators detect problems in their messaging environment, accurately locate the root cause, and resolve the problems from a single, easy-to-use interface. It provides a robust and informed troubleshooting solution for Exchange, BlackBerry, and Office Communications Server (OCS). Spotlight on Messaging extends Spotlight on Exchange into the messaging world.

From the Management Console, you can launch the Diagnostic Console for an individual server which shows, in real-time, the actual flow of data within individual servers at increasingly granular levels of detail. This level of detail allows you to pinpoint problems and take preventative action.

Spotlight on Messaging is comprised of the following diagnostic packs:

New in This Release

Diagnostic Pack for Exchange

The Diagnostic Pack for Exchange is an update for Spotlight on Exchange 5.8. New and updated features include:

Diagnostic Pack for BlackBerry

This is the initial release for Diagnostic Pack for BlackBerry. It includes:

Diagnostic Pack for Office Communications Server

This is the initial release for Diagnostic Pack for Office Communications Server. It includes:

Known Issues

The following is a list of issues known to exist at the time of Spotlight on Messaging release.

Feature

Known Issue

Defect ID

Message Delivery Health Test and Queue Health Test On Exchange 2003 systems, Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaborative Data Objects (MAPI CDO) 1.2.1 may become unstable. This may cause the Message Delivery tests to fail occasionally. The test will appear to timeout.  If the test fails, it will execute normally on the next attempt.

On Exchange 2003 systems, Microsoft Advanced Queue API may become unstable. This may cause the Queue Health test to fail occasionally. This test will appear to timeout. If the test fails, it will execute normally on the next attempt.

TF# 50900
Outlook Web Access Availability Health Test On Exchange 2007 systems, if you are using Windows PowerShell, the Outlook Web Access Availability Health Test fails to connect at the first attempt. You will see the following error message: "Failed to retrieve Outlook Web Access connectivity data from Exchange PowerShell. Mailbox logon statistics are not available."

This is caused by a bug in the PowerShell cmdlet.

The test does connect on the second attempt.

TF# 52979
On Exchange 2007 systems, the Outlook Web Access Availability Health Test fails on 32-bit versions of Windows XP. This is caused by a bug in the PowerShell cmdlet. TF# 53822
Spotlight on Windows If you have Spotlight on Active Directory and Spotlight on Messaging installed on the same computer and you uninstall Spotlight on Active Directory, you may receive an error when connecting to Spotlight on Windows in the Diagnostic Console. To workaround, contact Quest Support to re-register Datasource WinPerf. TF# 52982
Spotlight on Messaging installer

The installer and Deployment Guides list ESM as an unsupported prerequisite on Microsoft Vista. Microsoft recently released a version of ESM that runs on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Vista.

Note: This new version of ESM does not ship with MAPI CDO, therefore, you will need to install the latest version of MAPI CDO.

Note: You cannot install ESM on the following:

  • 64-bit version of Windows XP
  • 64-bit version of Windows 2003
  • 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 2008
TF# 53595
Diagnostic Services In rare cases on 64-bit versions of Windows XP, an error dialog may appear with text similar to “pure virtual function call”.  This error is benign, and the Diagnostic Services will function as expected. The error can be dismissed by clicking OK.  TF# 53838

Upgrade and Compatibility

Spotlight on Messaging can be installed side-by-side with Spotlight on Exchange. There is no upgrade path from previous versions of Spotlight on Exchange.

You can migrate data from Spotlight on Exchange to Spotlight on Messaging. For more information, see the Quest Spotlight on Messaging Diagnostic Pack for Exchange Deployment Guide.
